Texas Crew Productions and Omaha Productions are collaborating on a new feature documentary about the SMU Mustangs’ return to college football prominence for ESPN and streaming platform ESPN+.

Set to premiere on the sports network on September 21, Thunder On: Resurgence of the SMU Mustangs chronicles Southern Methodist University’s dramatic fall from grace after its football program was issued the harshest penalty in NCAA history, and follows the team’s long climb back to football relevance.

The film, produced by Texas Crew Productions in conjunction with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions prodco, is directed and executive produced by Texas Crew president Chip Rives (pictured).

The doc is set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing NCAA landscape, exploring how the private Dallas university defied history, politics and financial odds to earn its way back into the big leagues with swagger and Texas-sized pride.

Among the participants in the documentary are head coach Rhett Lashlee and quarterback Kevin Jennings, as well as incoming university president Jay Hartzell, newly minted athletics director Damon Evans and prominent SMU alumni and donors like David Miller, Clark Hunt and Rich Templeton.

Thunder On: Resurgence of the SMU Mustangs was executive produced by Rives and David Karabinas for Texas Crew Productions, along with Omaha Productions co-founders Manning and Jamie Horowitz.
